The amount of beef potentially contaminated by the nation\'s first mad- cow case was nearly four times higher than the federal government initially reported, The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said.
When the USDA launched the recall of affected meat Dec. 23, officials put the total at 10,400 pounds, or 5.2 tons, a figure they repeated for nearly two months. But the actual amount was 38,000 pounds, or 19 tons, the agency now acknowledges.

The Agriculture Department said Tuesday its meat recall from the first U.S. case of mad cow disease was nearly four times larger than previously disclosed, but dismissed the size as irrelevant.
The government said the recall grew to the equivalent of about 17,000 kilograms from the 4,700 it announced Dec. 23, when the government reported that a slaughtered Holstein cow in Washington state had tested positive for the brain-wasting disease.
The department posted the higher recall number on its website Feb. 9, but did not call attention to it because it was focused on finding out what happened to the beef, officials said. The Seattle Times reported the increase Tuesday.

米国で昨年末に初めて確認された牛海綿状脳症（ＢＳＥ）の感染牛について、米農務省の記録が改ざんされていた疑いが浮上した。省内の事件に捜査権限を持つフォン同省監察官は３日、下院で証言し、改ざんの有無と適切な対応だったかどうかについて、刑事捜査に入ったことを明らかにした。米国牛に対する当局のデータ管理に改めて疑問を投げかけるもので、今後の捜査次第では、輸入再開に向けた日米交渉にも影響を与えそうだ。
ＡＰ通信によると、農務省に対する刑事捜査は、処分された時の感染牛の状態が焦点になる。昨年１２月に確認された感染牛について、農務省は「歩行が困難な病的な牛」だったとしてきた。しかし、処理場関係者らの証言から、そうでなかったとの疑いがでていた。
下院の政府改革委員会では先月、関係者の証言をもとに「病的な牛ではなかった可能性がある」と指摘する書簡を、ベネマン農務長官に送っている。これに対して、長官は、農務省の説明に問題はなかったと反論していた。
感染牛の調査対象が「病的な牛」でなかった場合でも、「疑いがあれば病的な牛以外でも調べていたわけで、それ自体に問題はない」（スイスの農業専門家）。しかし、米国産牛肉の輸入再開には日本と同等の全頭検査などが必要とする農水省では、「牛に関するデータ管理そのものが十分でないことを示唆するものになる」と捜査の行方を注目している。
